STA’s (Spare Time Activities – Yeah right!)
Spare Time Activities (STA) are activities that are patterned after selected requirements found in the Boy Scout Handbook for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks. There are two purposes of these STA's. First, it helps a learner to understand what a Scout has to do to find time for advancement along with everything else in his life. Second, it is important that learners understand these skills as they may be called upon to assist their troop in approving or teaching these skills with Scouts.
The following guidelines are in effect:
o STA’s are to be worked on in learner's spare time at home.
o Completed STA's are to be turned in only at pre-opening of Blackfoot training sessions or at other times as the Troop Committee/Advancement Chair may designate.
o Two types of STA's exist; those that are turn‑in only, (an example is "Make a camp gadget") and those that are show and tell (an example is "Whip the ends of a rope").
o Learners must have a 3x5 card attached to turn-in STA’s only with their name, patrol name and patrol signature.
o Learners must complete 4 STA's in order to graduate from the training course and receive a bolo.
o To earn the STA lapel pin, a learner must complete 6 STA's.
o STA's that are highlighted in yellow are recommended, as they are areas that will be covered in greater detail in later sessions.
o All STA's must be completed and turned in by the beginning of Session 4 for credit to be received.
o Learners should be advised that approvals for STA's takes time and they should plan to arrive early if they have complete STA's to be approved.
o Questions regarding STA's should be directed to the Troop Committee/Advancement Chair. The Troop Committee/Advancement Chair has the final word in approving STA's.
o When the first STA for a learner is approved, the learner will be given an STA card to wear on his shirt pocket. Learners must be wearing the card in order for it to be signed. This should be pinned on the uniform with a safety pin.
o 11 STA's will be offered to learners.
